We decided to borrow the name for our project by the ancient Romans. What fascinated us most of all, was the discovery that the Latin term "Malum" had a double meaning. With this word in fact, the ancients use to call THE APPLE, a pleasing fruit, to the eye as to the palate, and THE EVIL as temptation, transgression, and sin. Also in Biblical myths, fairy tales and Homeric epic, the apple seems to represent the human discomfort against the impulses of our bodies. And one of those impulses which everyday we all feel is the hunger. With this connection it seemed interesting to us that it is exactly the apple, the only fruit of choice for those suffering from anorexia as a replacement of any dealy meal. Our collective in fact aims to sensitize public about eating disorders.
After the '90s, when eating disorders were broadly discussed and also condemned by the fashion industry, with constraints against too skinny models and by shocking advertising campaigns (remember Oliviero Toscani for the fashion brand Nolita, where the photographer immortalized a naked anorexic girl) , we suddenly feel that this issue has now completely changed direction, taking the way of a dangerous and self destructive “myth of thinness”. The reality seems to be that a serious disease like anorexia is now becoming a horrible trend, mostly pushed once again by the fashion industry and taking over on younger generations.
Our work is therefore a reaction to the increasing importance given by our society to the individual appearance and to the constant pressure made by the media.
We would like to invite especially the youngest, to reflect on this important issue, forcing them to think about the permanent damage which eating disorders can cause to the body and the psyche.
So we would like to finish our introduction by quoting once again the ancients, perhaps wiser than us, always keeping in mind “MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO” (healty mind in healty body).
